The Coptic-stitch is one the core bindings in any bookbinder's repertoire. Developed in third-century Egypt, modern bookbinders love it for its beauty and function--journals and albums lay flat and look pretty! A great companion to our Paper Marbling workshop!
Students will complete one 5 x 7 journal in this 4-hour workshop. Cost is $75, and includes all materials.

The cool touch of decades-old metal type. A firm two-handed impression roll for a copy proof. A deft transfer from composing stick to imposing stone. A gentle tap of the planer. Two quick twists of the locking key and the chase with form is secure. The press is inked, the guides aligned, the chase slips into position, paper is correctly placed and your very first impression is ready to print.
Participants set type, lockup and print on a Chandler and Price Pilot--we'll be printing limited edition notecards! Each participant will leave with 20 cards and envelopes as lifetime keepsake of their first letterpress experience.

In this three hour workshop, learn the basics of traditional paper marbling! Paper Marbling is a centuries-old technique, where paint floats on a surface of thickened liquid, then is swirled and combed to create patterns, and then by gently applying a sheet of paper to the surface, the paint lifts the patterns onto the prepared paper.
Marbled paper is striking when used as gift wrap, book end papers, portfolio covers, and more! Each student will make 15 sheets of paper, suitable for a range of bookbinding and gift-wrapping. Paper Marbling is a perfect course for students ages 10 and up, and great when paired with Accordion Bookbinding or Coptic-stitch Journals!

Broadsides are, in today's parlance, posters. But incorporate meaningful texts (and perhaps a bit of decoration), and watch the words take on new meaning and new life. In this workshop, we'll use handset type and decorative elements to create large-format prints of poems that inspire us.
Cost is $125, and includes 100% cotton paper for 5 11x17 prints, plus a sandwich lunch.
